The Best Snacks To Eat Before A Workout
Figuring out what to eat before a workout can be a slippery slope: we don’t want to eat too much and feel sick during our workout, but we also don’t want to eat too little in case we feel with no energy.
The Importance of Food Before A Workout
We need to make sure our body is properly fueled before and after a workout session. There are certain foods that will help our bodies prepare for it, and while we all have different nutritional needs, these common foods can aid recovery and give us the boost we need.
Bananas
Easy to grab and quick to consume, bananas really are the best snack to munch on before a workout! Bananas are packed with potassium and carbohydrates. Potassium is a great way to support our nerve and muscle function, while carbs are fuel for our body and brain. Next time you’re running out the door to a workout session, be sure to grab a banana for the car!

Porridge and Oats
Oats are full of fiber and slowly release carbohydrates throughout the day, because of this, our energy levels will be kept consistent throughout working out, meaning we can train harder for longer. Oats also contain Vitamin B, which helps to convert the carbohydrates into energy – making oats a pretty ideal snack to consume before a workout.
Dried Fruits
Another convenient food to grab for a pre-workout snack is dried fruits, such as berries, apricots, pineapples, and figs. Dried fruits are a great source of simple carbs and are easy to digest, so grabbing a handful of dried fruits before you head out will always be a good idea.
Protein Bars
Protein bars have come a long way, and these days, we can find genuinely delicious protein bars! Protein bars can be enjoyed before a workout session as they are beneficial for sustained energy, muscle growth (anabolic response), increasing muscle performance, and supporting muscle recovery.

Smoothies
If you’re the kind of person who can wake up early and immediately turn on a blender, then a pre-workout morning smoothie is definitely a great option for you! Smoothies make an ideal snack before exercising, as they are portable, endlessly customizable, and will give you a boost without making you feel overly full. For best results, drink up at least 30 minutes before starting your workout and snack on something right after.
